Frequently Asked Questions

Is Richmond’s GDR150 garage door motor suitable for DIY installation?

Yes. The GDR150 is designed to be DIY friendly and comes as a complete kit with the electric motor unit, rail and belt system, mounting hardware, remote controls, and step by step instructions. Before starting, make sure you have a nearby 240V power point and enough installation space, including adequate headroom and ceiling depth. For the full setup guide, see the GDR150 Installation Manual on page 15.

What types of garage doors is the GDR150 compatible with?

The GDR150 is suitable for residential sectional panel garage doors and tilt panel doors that use an overhead support rail. It can be used on both single and double garage doors, as long as the door is within the opener’s size and weight limits. For smooth and reliable performance, the door should already lift and lower easily by hand without sticking, binding, or feeling unbalanced. If the door is not operating properly on its own, it should be serviced before fitting an opener. You can check the full compatibility requirements in the GDR150 Installation Manual on page 6.

What safety features are included?

The GDR150 includes a strong range of built in safety features to help protect people, vehicles, and the door itself. These include soft start and soft stop to reduce wear, impact detection with automatic reversal if the door hits an obstruction while closing, support for safety beams or photocells, a manual release cord for electric power outages, and a caution light terminal for extra visibility. It also supports regular safety reverse testing using a 40mm obstacle, which is part of ongoing safe operation. Richmond garage door motors comply with AS/NZS 60335.2.95:2024, giving you confidence that the opener meets current safety standards.

How do I pair a remote control?

Pairing a remote to the GDR150 is quick and straightforward. From standby mode, press the CODE button once so a dot appears on the display. Press your chosen button on the remote, then press the same button again until the display confirms pairing. The GDR150 can store up to 50 remote codes, and two GTR179 remotes are included in the box. If the unit memory is full, you will need to clear old codes before adding more. You can find the full programming guide in the GDR150 Installation Manual on page 25.

Can I control the GDR150 from my phone?

Yes. The GDR150 can be controlled from your phone when connected to the Richmond SmartR Home WiFi Smart Switch, model GTR131, which is sold separately. Once connected, you can open and close the garage door through the SmartR Home app, adding convenience for everyday use. If you plan to operate the door remotely without direct line of sight, safety beams must be installed. This is required for compliant remote operation, and the auto close feature will not work without them.

What type of garage door motor do I need?

The right garage door motor depends on the type, size, weight and condition of your door. Sectional and tilt panel doors generally require a compatible overhead electric garage door opener with a rail system. Before choosing a motor, check that the door is balanced, moves smoothly by hand and has suitable fixing points. As an example, Richmond’s GDR150 garage door opener is designed for residential spring-balanced tilt panel and sectional doors up to 15.0m², making it suitable for many common home garage applications.

Can a garage door motor be added to an existing garage door?

In many cases, a garage door motor can be added to an existing garage door, provided the door is in good working condition and suitable for automation. The door should open and close smoothly by hand, without sticking, binding or feeling unusually heavy. Existing locks or ropes may need to be removed or disengaged before a motor is fitted. For sectional and tilt panel doors, a unit such as the Richmond GDR150 may be suitable where the door meets the required size, balance and installation conditions. A damaged or poorly balanced door should be serviced before automation.

Are safety beams required with a garage door motor?

Safety beams, also called photocells or IR beams, are recommended for many garage door motor installations and may be required depending on the installation. They help detect obstructions in the door opening and support safer automatic operation. For the Richmond GDR150, the manual states that photocells or IR beams must be used where the measured closing force at the bottom of the door is over 400 N, or where the door is operated remotely through a smart home or 4G system. Auto-close functions also require safety photo beams or a similar safety device to be fitted.
